Key Communication: Unlocking Corporate with Coaching and Compassion

Meeting Purpose

Discussing how coaching can be used as a tool in the workplace.

Key Takeaways

  • Checking in with ourselves (emotions, thoughts, bodily sensations) before engaging with others

  • Using coaching tools like powerful questions, active listening, and empathy when communicating with colleagues

  • Navigating workplace dynamics and getting buy-in across teams can be challenging without direct reporting authority

  • Acknowledging emotions is important even in environments that may not be conducive to expressing them openly

Topics

Checking in with Ourselves

  • Using tools like the Emotion Wheel to identify feelings

  • Recognizing limiting beliefs that may hold us back

  • Noticing bodily sensations connected to emotions

Checking in with Others

  • Active listening and reflecting back what we hear

  • Asking powerful "what/who/when/where" questions from a place of curiosity

  • Practicing empathy by recognizing we can't fully understand another's experience

Navigating Workplace Scenarios

  • Colleague taking credit for your work

  • Identify the real impact beyond just feeling unappreciated

  • Get clear on what you need (e.g. recognition, boundary setting)

  • Mistakes being blamed on the wrong team

  • Does the person want you to intervene or just need to be heard?

  • Can they actually say "no" or do they need support?

  • Getting buy-in across teams for an initiative

  • Explore what's really needed - someone on your side? Processing the difficulty?

  • How to operate when emotions aren't encouraged in the workplace culture?

Next Steps

  • Bookmark exploring how to process emotions in environments that discourage expressing them

  • Participants to reflect on remaining questions to explore coaching in the workplace further
