The Next Generation

I had two teachers who elaborated on the matters of fake and real. One was once called to a psychiatry ward to address the silent world of a catatonic. The patient once believed that he was going to be killed by a poisonous snake and to protect himself he stopped walking and talking. Living in horror that somewhere on the floor a snake was luring to attack him, he remained lying on his bed for years. Silent and still.

Upon arrival the teacher went to the local Zoo and got a real python and 300 rubber snakes. Back at the shower cabin of the psychiatry ward he nested rubber snakes on the floor and harmless python Nelly on the shower head and instructed the nurse to bring the patient in the wheel chair. Upon seeing the snakes the patient screamed with horror but once asked the question: "Which of them are fake and which real?" he lucidly pointed out at rubber snakes shouting "Fake!" and then at Nelly screaming "Real!" He was released from the hospital soon after.

In 90s China had no regulations to govern Qigong practitioners. Thousands  would gather to practice and people would be miraculously healed. Some teachers had great capacity to gather people but used the opportunity for various personal gains so China began to regulate the practice pointing out which healers were fake and which were real. Thus, the other teacher I practiced with, as apprentice with his master, had a chance to meet with all healers and learn about their practices. Some practices they kept for themselves, calling them fake but continuing to teach them within the lineage because they saw the real benefit they provided.

Both teachers taught me how to distinguish fake from real but eventually I left their teachings and saught for guidance from compassionate teachers. I continue to follow their approach as the beacon of hope. Under their guidance, Beijing Mindfulness Centre continues to support the community with mindfulness and coaching beyond the physical space and hutong walls.
